Field notes
A volcano you can ski all the way around — when the Summit chair spins, every aspect of the cone is in play, an experience unique on the continent. Long cruisers, catchy volcanic gullies, and drier-than-typical Cascade snow on the range's east side.
Bend is the draw as a base: a genuinely great town twenty-five minutes away with breweries and reasonable beds. Full Ikon access. Wind and rime shut the summit often — flexible itineraries win. The season runs long, into late May.
