Powder Compass
Privacy Policy
This is a plain-language draft that reflects how Powder Compass actually handles data today. It has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, and it will be updated before launch and as the product grows. If anything here is unclear, email [email protected].
Powder Compass tells skiers and snowboarders the historical odds of good snow for a given place, week, and budget. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the control you have over it. The short version: we collect as little as we can, we never sell your personal information, and you can have your data deleted.
What we collect
- Your email address, if you give it to us. We use confirmed (double) opt-in: we email you a link, and you’re only added to the list after you click it. You can unsubscribe from any email.
- A first-party analytics identifier. We set a cookie with a random ID so we can understand how people move through the site (for example, how many people who look up a resort go on to sign up). It is not tied to your name and we don’t use it to track you across other websites.
- What you search for. When you use planning tools, we record the trip parameters — region, dates, budget, party size, and the resorts considered — so we can see, in aggregate, what snow and trips people actually want. This is a core part of the product.
- Outbound booking clicks. When you click a lodging, lift-ticket, or travel link, we log the click with an anonymous reference ID so partners can credit the referral to us (see our Affiliate Disclosure).
- Basic technical data that any website receives — approximate location, device and browser type, and aggregate usage — through our hosting and analytics providers below.
How we use it
- To send you the emails you asked for, and nothing you didn’t.
- To measure and improve the product, and to understand demand for resorts and travel windows in aggregate.
- To credit affiliate partners for referrals and keep the service free.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers to run the product. They process data on our behalf, under their own terms:
- Cloudflare — hosting, content delivery, and our database.
- Brevo — sending confirmation and product emails.
- Google Analytics — aggregate site analytics.
- Affiliate networks (such as Travelpayouts, Liftopia, and AvantLink) — which receive an anonymous click reference when you follow a booking link, not your personal details.
Cookies & analytics
We use a first-party cookie for the analytics identifier described above, plus analytics provided by Google. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. You can clear or block cookies in your browser; the site still works without them.
How long we keep it, and how deletion works
You can ask us to delete your data at any time by emailing [email protected]. When accounts launch, deletion will also be a one-click action in the product. When you delete your data, here is exactly what happens:
- Deleted outright: your profile, saved preferences, watched resorts, saved plans and shortlists, and any logins.
- Kept, but stripped of your identity: if you contributed a structured trip report, we remove any free-text you wrote and detach your identity, keeping only the numeric ratings as anonymous conditions data. Records of aggregate demand (what was searched) and booking clicks survive with your identity removed, so the aggregate stays intact without pointing back to you.
- Untouched: our historical odds record contains no personal data — it is about resorts and weather, never about you.
Your email address is replaced with a non-reversible marker so the same address isn’t accidentally re-added, and your account is closed.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information, and to opt out of certain processing. Residents of California (CCPA/CPRA) and the EU/UK (GDPR) have specific rights; email us and we will honor applicable requests. You can always unsubscribe from emails using the link in any message.
Children
Powder Compass is not directed to children, and we don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 13 (or the equivalent age in your region).
Changes & contact
We’ll update this policy as the product changes and post the new effective date above. Questions or requests: [email protected].
